Ice hockey: Canada beat Team Europe in World Cup final opener

Canada drew first blood in the World Cup Final hockey, the best three on Tuesday with a 3-1 victory that brought Cinderella Team Europe run a step towards the abolition of midnight.

Team Europe, a mixture of eight players from countries which were widely picked at the last end when the tournament began 10 days ago, had a quick start, but Canada Hockey Jersey quickly took control.

“We came here today to find a way to win a game, we won a game,” said Canadian coach Mike Babcock told reporters. “So now, tomorrow we will get better again. ”

After withstanding a flurry of shots of Team Europe, Brad Marchand of Canada opened the scoring after a short pass from Patrice Bergeron in less than three minutes.

Canada added another later in the period when Ryan Getzlaf took advantage of a turnover by the Slovak defenseman Zdeno Chara and ran onto the ice on a break on a three before feeding Steven Stamkos for his first goal of the tournament.

Team Europe has done well to thwart the Canadian attack in the second period and pulled to within a goal when striker Tomas Tatar Slovak jumped on a rebound seven minutes in the period.

But that was all the scoring the Europeans, whose list includes players from Slovenia, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France and Norway, could muster.

Bergeron restored two goals ahead of Canada when he cashed in a flow of Sidney Crosby, who sent a backhand pass from behind the net, in the middle of the last period.

Olympic champions will have the chance to win the World Cup hockey title in the second match on Thursday.

Team Europe, rejected by many gadget before their run to the final, were shot, but remain confident they have the pieces in place to respond.

“Definitely disappointed right now, but at the same time, it could probably be our best game so far in this tournament,” said their captain Slovenian Anze Kopitar.

“We definitely showed that we can play with them and that’s what you have to carry. It is obvious that the first two goals, mistakes on our part, and we got to eliminate it and play our game. ”
